I’m not the kind to freak out in a crisis, I’m probably too calm. If I happen to be asleep, I’m so completely irrational you should just leave me for dead.
Sometime in the wee hours things happened. Boyfriend lives a block over and he said he heard electrical buzzing and saw flashes of light. I assume Maybe witnessed the same because when I woke up all 56 pounds of her was asleep on my shoulder.
I don’t know what caused me to open my eyes but moments after I did my entire house lit up.
I watched the window, puzzled, thinking, “these black out curtains from Kohls got five stars. Whatever that was must’ve been really really bright!”
But Maybe wasn’t tense, Brick was still asleep, must’ve been aliens. I considered for a moment calling my best friend to make sure her house wasn’t on fire, she lived right behind me so maybe the light was actually a blazing inferno of where the space ship crashed?
*It should be noted, her house was behind my mom’s house – not mine – and I haven’t considered her a friend for 20’odd years.
I closed my eyes to – a normal person would say “go back to sleep” but I’m pretty sure I never really woke up – but my cell phone started flashing alerts. I turned to look at the time but the digital alarm clock was dead. No surprise, it was really old. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand, noted it was 530am, then quickly shoved it under my pillow so the aliens wouldn’t know I was home. Rolled my face into Maybe’s butt and went back to sleep.
We got out of bed a couple hours later, wondered if the aliens had left, wandered to the kitchen to discover there was no coffee… and it was at this moment my brain finally engaged. The power was out.
I had to make instant coffee with hot tap water because all the camping gear is at Boyfriend’s and it made me chuckle. Just a week ago we were all clamoring about being prepared for a major earthquake and I can’t even make coffee in a power outage. While waiting for the tap to run scalding, I glanced out the window and saw a man up a ladder putting a body bag on a transformer.
I guess I was lucky, at least it was just a Saturday.
